An SRV record is a data entry in the DNS. As opposed to the A (or AAAA) record type, it does not define the address of a specific host in a domain (like www.innovaphone.com), but a specific service provided in a domain (hence the name).
For example, if a domain provides a callable SIP service, it would be defined by an SRV record called _sip._tcp.example.com like so:
name
TTL
class
SRV
priority
weight
port
target
_sip._tcp.example.com.
86400
IN
SRV
10
60
5060
sip.example.com.
The nature of the service is denoted as a fixed string prefixed to the domain name (_sip._tcp. in our sample case). The prefix itself is defined in the RFC that defines the service (RFC3263 in our case).
Also, multiple entries may be provided to provide for load balancing and/or redundancy using the priority and weight fields.
